I struggle to fall asleep at night.
When I do eventually fall asleep, I’m generally restless, wake up multiple times throughout the night and when my alarm goes off, I’m groggy and can’t wait for that first cup of coffee to get my day started.
We all know many people who experience something similar to what I’ve described above. We also all know that many of those people don’t really want to turn to medication in the form of hard-hitting sleeping tablets which they may become dependent on.
That’s exactly why I opted to give NOW Foods Sleep a try – a decision I could not be happier with.
NOW Foods Sleep is a blend of natural herbs which are ‘traditionally used to promote a calm, relaxed state and support rejuvenating sleep.’ It also contains GABA, which is a ‘neurotransmitter normally produced in the brain, where its function is to ease nervous tension.’
At night, 1 hour before I’d like to fall asleep, I take 2 capsules of NOW Foods Sleep with a sip of water. I then carry on with some work and take care of my evening routine, before climbing into bed about 55 minutes later. I set my alarm, turn the light off and, like clockwork, I fall asleep immediately.
On the odd occasion, I will wake up once in the night – but that’s usually to go to the toilet. Most nights, I sleep right through until my alarm goes off in the morning. This is the best part – I actually wake up feeling energised, revitalised and ready to take on the day. It’s incredibly obvious that I’ve had a good night’s rest, and this leaves me feeling excited for the day ahead.
I’ve done some research on the ingredients found in NOW Foods Sleep, you can learn more about them here:
Valerian Root Extract
Valerian is a flowering plant which is native to Europe and Asia and its root is used to make medicine.
It has been found through multiple studies that a dose of 400-900mg of valerian root extract taken up to 2 hours before bed can reduce the amount of time it takes for you to fall asleep by 15-20 minutes, as well as improve the quality of your sleep.
NOW Foods Sleep is optimally dosed with 600mg of valerian root extract per serving.
Hops are the dried flowering part of the hop plant Humulus lupulus. They are generally used in brewing beer and also for making medicine.
Studies have shown that when combined with ingredients such as valerian root extract and passion flower extract, hops can help improve sleep quality. Research suggests that this combination can also reduce the amount of time it takes you to fall asleep and decrease anxiety and total activity through the night.
NOW Foods Sleep contains 300mg of hops per serving.
Passion flower is a climbing vine which is predominantly found in Mexico, Central America and South America. It is used to make medicine.
Research has shown that drinking passion flower tea 1 hour before bedtime can improve sleep quality. As mentioned above, this ingredient works best when used in conjunction with valerian root extract and hops. This combination improves sleep to a similar extent as that experienced by taking zolpidem.
NOW Foods Sleep is dosed with 200mg of passion flower extract per serving.
GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) is a neurotransmitter which sends chemical messages through the brain and nervous system.
GABA supplements are used for a variety of reasons, including anxiety relief, mood improvement, reducing PMS symptoms, treating ADHD, and more.
NOW Foods Sleep contains 200mg of GABA per serving.
Interesting research has shown that taking a product which is dosed with a specific combination of valerian root extract, hops and passion flower (which NOW Foods Sleep is) every day before bedtime for 2 weeks can increase total sleep time by 2.5 hours, reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep by about 1 hour and decrease the amount of nighttime awakenings by 50%. A study which yielded these results was conducted on patients with mild insomnia.
If a good night’s rest is something you find yourself longing for, and – like me – you don’t want to turn to ‘sleeping tablets’, give NOW Foods Sleep a try. I highly recommend this product.
